Telangana Election Results 2018: TRS crushes all, gets absolute majority

Hyderabad: The ruling TRS looked set to sweep the assembly polls in Telangana, with its candidates leading in 90 constituencies, leaving challenger People's Front led by the Congress way behind. Trends were available for all but one of the 119 seats of the state assembly. Celebrations have started in earnest across several offices of TRS in Hyderabad other parts of the state. TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao himself won by a margin of over 51,000 votes from his Gajwel seat, trouncing V Pratap Reddy of the Congress. His son and minister K T Rama Rao is leading in Sircilla by 15,096 votes after the third round of counting over his Congress rival K K Mahender Reddy. According to PTI, Telangana Congress president N Uttam Kumar Reddy was leading in Huzurnagar by 1852 votes over his nearest TRS rival Saidi Reddy after the third round. Though most exit polls had forecast a victory for the TRS, some had predicted a close contest with the 'Praja Katumi' (People's Front) led by the Congress which also includes the TDP, CPI and the newly formed TJS. The opposition alliance, however, appeared set for a drubbing in Telangana. The Congress party, though on course of making major gains in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, failed to make inroads into the citadel of Rao, widely credited for the creation of Telangana.

Kavitha said on Tuesday that there was never a doubt that the party will retain power with a huge majority. Kavitha, a member of the Lok Sabha, said there was no anti-incumbency as the TRS government had done well on all fronts during the last four-and-a-half years. The TRS leader said the so-called tough fight between the TRS and Congress-led People's Front was showcased only on paper. She told a news channel that Telangana had voted for development. "KCR's hard work has paid off," said Kavitha, adding that it was both welfare programmes and Telangana pride which worked for the party in this election. The Nizamabad MP said Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu hijacked the People's Front to hide his failures in Andhra Pradesh. She said after this huge victory, KCR would now focus on national politics to work for an alternative to both Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party. (IANS)
